I have never been there.. Utah is as far west as I have ever been. Have you been there?

Only Oakland's airport for a layover, that's it. So, not really. You're dream was sort of correct about the climate from what I understand, just not to that extreme. My older kids went to San Diego with the grandparents one year and my oldest went to San Francisco with his mom last year. San Diego has year-round nice weather and San Francisco is a bit cold year round.
