The Plane Crash, I Need Grandpa

My (dream) grandfather lived across the road in a large boxy house.   I stood on my doorstep and looked out over the landscape of our homes.   There were large open spaces with no trees around, the freeway with rushing traffic was a little distance to the south.   I heard the roar of an airplane coming from the east and turned to look at it.   To my horror, the plane was out of control, flying upside down.   It careened over the freeway and crashed somewhere to the west.  I heard the explosion and felt the concussion in the earth, watching as plumes of black smock rose into the air.

I ran barefoot across the yards towards my grandfather's house.  I needed him to help with my grandmother (there was a sudden emergency involving her that I can't recall), and I wanted to tell him about the airplane crash.   His house was about a half block away and I wondered why I didn't just drive over there to pick him up, because he'd have a difficult time getting back to my house quickly.

Soon enough I was at the edge of his property.  I was surprised that his house was painted brown and appeared much smaller and newer.   There was a green vinyl path winding it's way up to his front door.*

Additional Comments:

As I wrote this dream up, I realized that my dream grandfather's house looked very much like a house I used to draw all the time when I was little. I can remember vividly always drawing either that house (or a boat*) each and every time I was given paper and crayons. The house had shutters and a winding green path leading to the front door. There were small bushes on either side of the door and a small round window above it. I always drew a baby carriage near the house, an old fashioned perambulator. *(sometimes I drew a boat with two stacks and many portholes sitting high in choppy water)

Lady of the House

I lived in a new home, unquestionably the lady of the house, but there was at least one other family to consider who lived there as well.   My waking life co-worker Rose's family was one of them.  The house was pretty and clean, but closed up.  I gradually started opening blinds and cranking open the casement windows.   Bird song and a warm breeze filled the kitchen, along with golden streaks of sunlight that poured through the slats of the wooden blinds.   It was a relief to me, but I was conscious that there were more people to please around me that might not like the sunshine coming in.

I made doctor's appointments for four of us.  When I called to confirm, I discovered that I'd booked six appointments instead of four.   I told the girl on the line that she must be mistaken, but I was pretty sure that I'd been the one to make the mistake.  After I hung up, I worried over the fact that I hadn't yet told the three other people that they were going to the doctor with me on Friday.  What would happen if they couldn't get off work?  I'd show up alone, feeling bad about last minute cancellations.

Rose's extended family showed up for an impromptu party.  They poured into the house with food and laughter, bringing with them a feeling of riotous joy.  A young man appeared with a guitar and a sweet sounding voice, singing a song he was making up as he went along.  I was immediately captivated by his presence and watched him as he led his family in the song.  A pretty young woman was his partner and her voice blended with his in perfect harmony.  I felt a twinge of jealousy, but swept it away as silliness.  I was clearly an entire generation older than the two of them.   My husband came to sit by me and we listened in companionable silence.  A kid had taken over the drum kit and he was doing a pretty good job, losing the beat once in awhile but gamely plodding on.  I whispered in my husband's ear,  "maybe you can sit in on their jam later..."  (he's a drummer irl)

A little later we were heading to the beach for a spur-of-the-moment picnic.  Rose was laughing about how you could never go anywhere with her family without there being lots of food and wine.  Indeed, we all were carrying picnic bags stuffed with supplies.   My point of view abruptly changed and I was looking at the scene from the air.   The family bus was careening across the sand, heading towards a large St. Bernard dog that was buried in the sand up to his neck.   I wondered about this, it seemed enigmatic and slightly ominous.  Was the dog alright?  Were we here to rescue the rescue dog?   As the bus circled around the buried dog, it laboriously dragged itself out of the sand and went bounding off toward home.   We all followed; talking and chatting quietly, our picnic bags empty now and the bus gone and forgotten.

I walked next to my husband.  We were quietly singing the song from earlier, a pleasant tune with nonsense syllables (that I forgot as soon as I woke up).   I noticed that we were singing in the same harmonies that the young man I had so admired sang with his female partner.  This made me smile.

    Asleep at the Wheel

I was once again driving my car from a seat in the back.   A young girl lay her head in my lap and I brushed the hair from her forehead with care.  I worried for a moment that I wasn't paying enough attention to the road, but I juggled it pretty well and grew more confident.

I gradually realized that I might be asleep, which REALLY worried me because I was driving home from work.   I noticed that I might be going the wrong way, in fact, nothing looked familiar at all.   I took a ramp off the freeway and it became a very high and narrow bridge.   Now I was truly frightened, because I was asleep and how can one drive on a narrow bridge if they are ASLEEP??   I didn't think I was dreaming, I thought I was asleep at the wheel.

I somehow managed to navigate the bridge safely, which was sort of a miracle because I knew I was driving right off it at one point.   My car became a bike then and I walked it out of an underground parking lot.   The sidewalks out front were cracked with weeds growing between the pavement.  A cat that I thought might be my own Phoebe approached me, purring.   I recognized that I wasn't her, but I petting the little cat anyways.  She stretched and purred.
