Grant was looking up a guy in my high school class on Facebook, because apparently he was getting married to (or is married to) someone in his class. He asked me if this guy was an astronaut, to which I promptly said no, because this guy had definitely been going to the military and there was no way I could conceive of him being brilliant enough to be an astronaut. On his profile he said something about “living in 101, love hanging out with the girls in 117”. After being perplexed by this for a while, we discovered that this meant that they were homeless, and living in the huge bulk boxes at Sams Club. We went to visit, and discovered a bunch of people living there, about 20 from “my class,” which mostly meant my Mudd class but there are a few people from my high school class mixed in as well. It was late at night, so the store was closed and everyone was having a jolly good time running around in the aisles and just hanging out and talking. At some point, a bunch of the smartest guys at Mudd were all sitting on a couch together, hanging out and basically being the smart club. Later, I was part of a conversation circle that included Alan Reed. He had two birds, a “big” one which was about parakeet sized, and a small one, which was about the size of his thumb, and was apparently a finch. Somehow through the course of our conversation, I decided that I should get my own finch. So I got my own, and got a little cage for it and everything. I went to a pet store in some mall to get something for it, and ran into Mariam. Apparently she had two finches, and had had them in her quad all semester (now we’re sort of back on campus, because I remember that the bird cage was sitting on Eileen’s desk in our quad). The pet store happens to be selling cute little black kittens, with very stubby legs. The cage that they are kept in is horribly maintained though. While still at the pet store, my finch (which is yellow) escapes. It keeps on getting further and further away as we try to catch it (Alan comes into the store at some point, and is disappointed in my finch keeping skills), and eventually it escapes into the atrium of the mall, even though we were mostly keeping the doors to the store shut. At this point we give up ever finding it, and I feel like sort of a failure. I want to buy two finches to make up for it, but I’m worried that they’ll die as well.
