Strange opera at an unfinished apartment complex

I was in a large courtyard in the middle of a large apartment complex. The apartments were five or six stories tall and were under construction. This courtyard was at least 200 feet wide and longer than that. There were three people behind me, two men and a woman. We were in an opera.

This opera was unusual. We spoke a lot of scenes, and we weren't speaking now. The singing scenes were improvised. I was playing a woman, and I imagined I was wearing a long, flowing red dress, but I was wearing normal clothes. The other woman rode a bike beside me while one of the men walked behind her. I stared at her, and she turned around.

I stopped and looked to my left at a mostly finished apartment building. I walked toward it and tried to walk as dramatically as possible. I kept glancing back over my shoulder at the people. I stopped at a chain that was supposed to keep people from approaching the apartment. I dramatically looked around and then ducked under it. When I ducked under, the music got really loud. The people with me gasped.

We got to the building. I wanted to stand on the second-story balcony, but the only way up was to climb. I found my footing and started climbing. The railing on the balcony seemed weak, so I grabbed it and shook it. I looked at the anchor points and figured it was safe, so I climbed over. The other man joined me.

I sang a song and touched his hand. I guess it was supposed to be a love song, but I knew this was ridiculous and that I was playing a woman. So I came up with an idea to throw him off. It was so stupid I barely could say it. I kept having to look away because I'd laugh if I looked him in the eye. Finally I mustered it up and said, "Do your impression of your pressure cooker."

Additional Comments:

This dream ended so ridiculously, I woke up laughing.

    Our production of 'Rent' fails

I was on a stage with some friends and other people, and I was told we were performing "Rent" that evening. I would be playing Roger, and Tim Vines was Mark. I think Anne was there, but I don't know who she was.

We started the show with Mark coming out, and the audience clapped. There was an "X" on the stage for him to stand, but there were tons of X's in a grid pattern all over, and I had no idea how anyone knew where to stand. When he started and said, "We begin on Christmas Eve," the audience clapped again. It was distracting.

We went through the first Voice Mails and got to the song "Rent." No one really knew the blocking for anything, and we kept messing up the lyrics. The audience didn't seem to care at first, but they started talking and moving around a few minutes in.

When "Rent" started, everyone, including me, started singing, even though it was only Mark's part. I had forgotten who sang the first verse, so I just joined in. The blocking was awful. People just ran around and stood on whatever X's they wished. When it came to my part, I tried my hardest to sing and do the blocking, but it was difficult. I could sing just fine. The singing wasn't the problem for anyone. But we constantly forgot lyrics and had no clue where to stand.

As the song neared the end, some stagehands just walked on stage to set up the next set. They came on stage while we were still performing. They put up a wall between most of the stage and the audience. We wrapped up the song trying to be seen outside the walls and through a window.

The next song, "Light My Candle," took awhile to start. I knew it was a big song for me, and I was really nervous. The Mimi character knocked on the door on the new set piece. She was on the audience side, and I was behind the wall. When she knocked, I immediately forgot the line. I stood there like an idiot and just decided to open the door. I said, "The door" after remembering the line and after opening the door.

The music started after an awkward pause, and we started singing. Mimi tried to walk inside the door, but I pushed her out so the audience could see us. A lot of the audience had left. Some left in such a hurry, they left their popcorn.

Mimi forgot the lyrics and just stood at a sink in the window. I stood there like an idiot and tried to improvise, but I couldn't think to improvise during the song. I missed my cues because of it.

One guy from the audience who had been making gestures and angry sounds walked on stage to the sink. He loudly said: "Look. You guys are doing terribly, and you're not doing 'Rent' any service. Just give up." He left the stage, but I walked out the door to face the audience, and I addressed them directly. I angrily shouted that we were doing our best. Jerks like him didn't appreciate our effort. We are just a bunch of friends who adore "Rent" and wanted to perform it.

    Additional Comments:

The theater seemed similar to my high school theater, but the audience seats were huge. They were like the big movie theater seats that recline and have individual cup holders.

The woman who played Mimi was a stranger, though she sort of looked like Rosario Dawson.

    Slaves in Cambodia

My mom, brother and I were slaves in Cambodia. We were walking along a dirt road next to some fields. To our right was a field with a barrier of palm trees on three sides. They were planted so closely together, they acted as a fence. I don't know what they were fencing in, but someone didn't want anyone in there.

We turned right because the dirt road ended at a T intersection. The trees along that road had all been cut down. That's why the barrier was only on three sides. Tim jumped over the stumps and ran into the field. Mom and I were afraid he'd set off some kind of alarm and get in trouble, but nothing happened.

Then we were in a village. There were shacks all over the place, and we entered one that was a general store. We had two large bottles of laundry detergent and a box of detergent. Mom told me to hold on to them because people would try to steal them. I put the bottles under my arms and put the box on the counter. I didn't trust that, so I held one bottle and put the other bottle and box on the floor, where I put my foot on top of them.

Tim had lots of cash, and he was putting it in his hat and waistband of his pants. He was only tucking some of it in, so most of the cash was still showing. His strategy was that if he could see it, he'd know if someone was stealing it. I told him that was a bad idea. He turned toward me, and I saw a woman behind him grab a $20 bill. I told him she did, and he quickly turned around and saw her pocket it. She had other cash in her hand, so it was hard to tell if she had stolen it. He grabbed her by the shoulders and shook her, but she didn't return the money.

Mom had some eggs she wanted to buy, so she put them on the counter. The store clerk freaked out and shouted that they were human eggs. She cracked one open, but it was just like a normal chicken egg. There wasn't even a chicken inside. Two police officers came in and grabbed my mom. We shouted that it was impossible for them to be human eggs. We cracked the other eggs open to prove it, and they let her go.

At that time, I decided to leave on my own. Somehow I had turned into a black person. Mom was black too. She sat down in a chair next to the entrance to the shack. I walked over to her, kissed her on the lips and forehead and said I'd see her again. As I walked out of the store and along the road, a song started to play. Its lyrics were "I'm on the big road, Mama / tryin' to walk on home to God."

    Additional Comments:

This is highly unusual. I can't say I've ever been another race in a dream, let alone change races.
