I calculate how to build a spiral staircase spanning two levels, with the step in the middle leading out the front door.

(wake up, record)

I have trouble falling back asleep.  I try "faking" rapid eye movement, thinking that will get me into the dream state, but I try it for quite some time without any success.  Then it occurs to me, maybe the OPPOSITE is true ... don't move your eyes at all.

Sure enough, by trying to hold my eyes as rock-steady still as I can behind my eyelids, I soon go directly into a dream.  I'm in the lab I work in, but it's slightly altered.  I look at a crystal under my own personal (dream) microscope, but it's in L___'s department.  I see very solid crystals through the lens that almost make me forget I'm dreaming because they look so real ... they look a little like malachite.

Regaining my "lucid bearings," though, I walk right through a window and descend two stories to street level.  As I fall, I call down to a bunch of kids who I hear talking and who I also know must be dream characters.  From amongst the middle of them a cat comes running towards me and says in a human voice, "Hi Al!"

But I'm cautious, recalling that dream characters are often hostile.  Sure enough the cat throws a heavy metal spoon at me.  It misses but hits the side of the jersey barrier with a loud clunk.

"I gotta go now," I tell them and fly back up to another floor of the building and meet a middle-aged man there.  I wonder if he'll be another mean dream character but before I can think about it much, I wake up.

In a mall corridor, I find two pixies perched on a shopping cart.

pixies in a shopping cart

I push it at high speed towards a coworker, A___, intending to put on a show for her of pixies on a shopping cart flying by her.  But she takes it wrong and starts to cower in fear as if I'm going to run it into her -- and apparently she hasn't spotted the pixies on the metal framework.  Realizing that things have gone wrong, I send the cart into a spin that eventually brings it to a stop a ways from her -- but not before some of the spins come awfully close to A___.

She swears at me and I wake up.

I eat a banana and go back to sleep.

My father drives my old Gremlin (my second car, back in the 1970s) up a set of stairs.  I'm a passenger in the back seat and question if what he's doing is wise.  He insists that he knows what he's doing -- but when we get to the top, the front of the car rears up in the air and the whole thing flips over backwards.  I'm sure we're going to be killed as it tumbles over and over, back down the stairs.  But back on the basement floor that we started out on, we all get out of the car, shaken but not hurt.

I swear and am angry at him.  My mother, who was a passenger in the front seat, tries to stop the quarreling by saying, "Do you want to hear a funny story about your dad?"

I'm still angry and sulk for a few moments, but finally say, "OK."

    lily pond (illus.) and OBEs

I wake up too early, and since I've already used up my medication for the night that's supposed to help me sleep, I take a regular Unisom (which is NOT recommended for good, deep sleep -- but I figured I only needed a little bit more, and the quality didn't have to be that great).  I'm surprised that after a while of concentrating on my heartbeat, I easily slip into the state where I'm about to go OBE.  I'm sleeping in my old dormitory room, but don't even notice that -- I truly believe that this is where I fell asleep IRL.

(I went OBE about four times at this point, waking up after a minute or so each time, but easily falling back into the dream after waking up.  I just cannot now remember most of what happened in these sequences, except for the last one).

I slip so quickly into the OBE state the last time that I'm startled -- it happens in what seems like a split second, and I don't even notice any buzzing.  Can I really just go into it that easily every night?  I feel hopeful.

Still in the same dorm, I pass through a wall but run into some heating pipes, which are actually hot and unpleasant to dissolve my body through.  Finally, I get to a swimming pool.  The dream is fading, so I stare at some stairs and the dream seems to get solid again.  However, the second I look away everything starts to morph wildly from one thing into another, at such a frantic speed that I feel dizzy.  The stairs turn into a metal scaffold, and then into something else, and on and on and on like that.

This wakes me up, but I manage to fall back asleep again.  No longer lucid, I wander towards a pond with beautiful lily pads in it.  I see a woman wading through the water almost up to her neck, but she's fully dressed in old-fashioned clothes.

I want to take a picture of the purple flowers and dish-shaped leaves, and I realize that my camera is in my backpack, which I'm carrying.  But I also want to wade into the pool like the woman is doing, and dream logic tells me that won't damage my camera in my backpack (when of course it would).  I feel the water suddenly traveling up my the fabric of my clothing even though I'm not in it yet, and enjoy how refreshing it feels.

    I wake up.
