A___, my old cat from back in the 1980s, is stuck in a tunnel.
(wake up, record, fall back to sleep)
I go to do sit-ups, but I can't even do one. However, I somehow get up to 4 with quite a bit of effort (this reflects real life, I've started doing sit-ups in the morning right after I've had my coffee).
(wake up, record, fall back to sleep)
I discover that because I didn't take care of it, my (dream) pet frog has dried up and died in its terrarium. It kind of looks like a dried sponge version of a frog, and I'm horrified at how negligent I've been.
I try to rehydrate it by pouring water on it and, like a sponge, it expands and turns bright green again ... but under the stream of water I'm pouring on it, it suddenly floats off into a corner of the terrarium like a wet rag. I feel sad that I've let the little frog down by letting it die.

An issue of the New York Times is held together with one very solid staple.
(wake up, record, fall back to sleep)
My father has just died and my mother is still alive (IRL it's the opposite). I think I should call my mother and say hi and tell her how I miss talking to Dad. I can't figure this out, though ... how could I have gone for so long without giving her a call? It makes me feel guilty, like I've neglected her.
(shift) On the train, some guy sits down too close to me and I feel cramped, so I move up one seat. He's offended and I lie to him -- "No I just need space to work on my computer, yeah that's it."
Then I pretend to sleep, but I actually peer at little dots of dust on the floor. The exposure changes and they become very detailed, and it's almost like I have microscopic vision. One speck of dust actually looks like a water color with an ink outline, though, and I ponder that, but don't think of it as being too strange (this should have made me lucid, but it didn't). The engineer comes back to our car and the conductor starts singing some folk song, then the train starts up.
I wake up.

I realize my supervisor is taking the whole month off because I'm out of work. She can't afford to lose another whole full time position and other people weren't willing to bend on this, so the whole thing fell apart (dream logic, this makes no sense to me now that I'm awake -- although it is related to the fact that in real life my employer is offering early retirement packages and I'm thinking about it).
(wake up, record, fall back to sleep)
A nightmare in which my sister-in-law is telling me that my older brother, D___ (her husband) didn't make it to China. A woman comes up to him and says, "This may help."
But she cuts him with one of the sharp edges of a pair of scissors and runs away (this is related to the fact that he just had a cancerous nodule removed in real life, and I'm worried about him).
(wake up, record, fall back to sleep)
An auto "chop shop" where there are a whole bunch of cars where half of it is a gas guzzler and the other half is a hybrid. The halves are also completely different colors and the lot looks very strange (precognitive of tonight's episode of Cold Case, about a murder that took place in a used car dealership ... and the bright green car at the end of the show had been "chopped" up from parts of another similar car).
(wake up, record, fall back to sleep)
I get my cat, T____, to come back inside a (dream) house I think I live in. Then I picked her up and, suddenly lucid, breeze through the glass of a window and begin dropping down through the ground outside as if it was made of vapor. As we fall, I say, "You're free to do whatever you want," but she gives me one of those cat confused looks as if to say, Why do you bother trying to talk to me?
(wake up, record, fall back to sleep)
A strange bug that's a cross between a little hermit crab and a spider ... it clatters around on tiny legs that have dark, pointed ends.
(wake up, record, fall back to sleep)
"Do that many planes come in at JFK?" I ask someone as we see many lights ascending and descending off in the distance. We seem to be watching it in fast motion, though (this is from watching a recent episode of UFO Hunters in which someone supposedly took pictures of UFOs landing and taking off; but to me it just looked like footage taken from a great distance, that had been speeded up of a major airport with planes landing and taking off at night).
I wake up.

I calculate how to build a spiral staircase spanning two levels, with the step in the middle leading out the front door.

(wake up, record)
I have trouble falling back asleep. I try "faking" rapid eye movement, thinking that will get me into the dream state, but I try it for quite some time without any success. Then it occurs to me, maybe the OPPOSITE is true ... don't move your eyes at all.
Sure enough, by trying to hold my eyes as rock-steady still as I can behind my eyelids, I soon go directly into a dream. I'm in the lab I work in, but it's slightly altered. I look at a crystal under my own personal (dream) microscope, but it's in L___'s department. I see very solid crystals through the lens that almost make me forget I'm dreaming because they look so real ... they look a little like malachite.
Regaining my "lucid bearings," though, I walk right through a window and descend two stories to street level. As I fall, I call down to a bunch of kids who I hear talking and who I also know must be dream characters. From amongst the middle of them a cat comes running towards me and says in a human voice, "Hi Al!"
But I'm cautious, recalling that dream characters are often hostile. Sure enough the cat throws a heavy metal spoon at me. It misses but hits the side of the jersey barrier with a loud clunk.
"I gotta go now," I tell them and fly back up to another floor of the building and meet a middle-aged man there. I wonder if he'll be another mean dream character but before I can think about it much, I wake up.
