In a mall corridor, I find two pixies perched on a shopping cart.

pixies in a shopping cart

I push it at high speed towards a coworker, A___, intending to put on a show for her of pixies on a shopping cart flying by her.  But she takes it wrong and starts to cower in fear as if I'm going to run it into her -- and apparently she hasn't spotted the pixies on the metal framework.  Realizing that things have gone wrong, I send the cart into a spin that eventually brings it to a stop a ways from her -- but not before some of the spins come awfully close to A___.

She swears at me and I wake up.

I eat a banana and go back to sleep.

My father drives my old Gremlin (my second car, back in the 1970s) up a set of stairs.  I'm a passenger in the back seat and question if what he's doing is wise.  He insists that he knows what he's doing -- but when we get to the top, the front of the car rears up in the air and the whole thing flips over backwards.  I'm sure we're going to be killed as it tumbles over and over, back down the stairs.  But back on the basement floor that we started out on, we all get out of the car, shaken but not hurt.

I swear and am angry at him.  My mother, who was a passenger in the front seat, tries to stop the quarreling by saying, "Do you want to hear a funny story about your dad?"

I'm still angry and sulk for a few moments, but finally say, "OK."

wake up and go back into the dream TEN TIMES

I'm with the gay running club that I used to belong to years ago. We're in the city, and A___, a former co-worker who's straight in real life, was there as a gay man. He seems to be combined with M____, another man who's straight in real life. I don't notice this change to being gay, much less the fact that he's a combination of two people. There's confusion, and I'm driving my old Gremlin (which died in 1981) to where the running group is meeting in a city square. I have trouble with the gearshift, and my combination friend hollers directions in through my window what to do. A shift (in the dream), and my Gremlin turns into a bicycle that I'm riding along a four-lane road that the rest of them are running on.

I wake up, have a yogurt and go back to sleep.

Next, I'm in a very long dream in which the recurring theme of being mentally disabled dominates the story line (I've forgotten most of this, since it was SO-O long!). I seem to be back in boarding academy and I even had arranged for a room with my old roommate, D___. But I'm lying in bed unable to get up and go to class. D___ even comes in and asks me if I'm OK, but walks away when I don't reply (the fact was that I could barely even open my eyes).

It gets in my head that I am in the dream state, but that the setting is real -- that is, I think I'm really back in boarding academy in the dorm but stuck in a dream within the dream. So I try shaking my head back and forth.

This seems to work. I find myself back in real life lying in bed -- but immediately I think, Don't wake up yet, experiment more with this kind of dream! So I stop shaking my head and let myself go back into the dream.

This happens over and over -- I want to say even TEN times. It causes a shift in the dream each time, so that I'm in a new setting. But a couple of things do not change -- in every new setting I find myself a student back in some kind of school, and also find myself mentally disabled. The only one of these ten scenes that sticks in my head is the very last one.

I'm at a beach side hotel with my cousins, the W_____ family. I'm lying in a bed in one of the hotel rooms and they are trying to get me to snap out of my state by talking to me. I try to respond to them, but I cannot move at all. I also am desperately worried about a project for the end of the semester at the art school that I am enrolled in, for I have not worked on it all.

Finally, I wake up by shaking my head back and forth really hard. My heart sinks when I am back in the real world and recognize my real-life situation ... living alone and by myself. This is no way to live! I tell myself.

I go back to sleep and have one more dream. My cousin who died of leukemia in real life, L____, is on an estate and is all dressed up. She is arguing with my mom -- the latter is being demanding about paintings that she insists are hers.

    I wake up.

    false memory celebrities

I was at a party that was being held in the town I used to live in, S____. It was at the function hall that people usually rented out for big parties. This hall had large chandeliers hanging from the ceiling, and was quite nice.

The place was packed with celebrities.* But false memory...AND memory "erasure"... was greatly at work here, for now that I'm awake not only am I unable to place a single one of these celebrities, but I also cannot recall a single one of their faces.

The scenario was that one celebrity had played a terrible, cruel prank on everyone there. I can't recall what it was, but it was preventing all of us from moving about normally and, for that matter, even leaving the hall.* We couldn't figure who had done it. There were several leads and we directly questioned a few people, but it turned out they were innocent.

Finally, a man confessed that he had done it. He was some sort of celebrity magician, I think, but I can't recall too much about him. While he was willing to admit he had done it, he was unwilling to reverse the spell so that we could leave.*

I somehow managed to get outside. It was dark, and I went over to my car. It was the Gremlin I used to have when I lived in S_____.* I didn't see anything unusual about still having that ancient car, though (it died in 1981 in real life).

I ran into P_____ in the parking lot, a friend of mine who's in my writing group. I stopped and chatted with her for a while. In the course of the conversation, she suddenly told me that she was able to hear my thoughts...ALL of them!*

I was so surprised by this that I stopped talking and pondered it for a while. This would mean that we would have to become best friends, I realized.* And, as I thought about it some more, I realized that I could hear all of HER thoughts as well!* We discussed this, and decided that we should write a novel together. It would be an experiment that had never been tried before, for two writers who could hear each other's thoughts to write a book together.

I woke up, ate breakfast, and went back to bed.

In a new dream, I was at a university that was by the sea. I was applying to do some more studies. I went to the office of an astrophysics professor, and after he looked over my academic record, he got all fired up about the idea of having me as an astrophysics student. He was certain I would do very well, and got me excited about the prospects, too. It was decided, then...I would do it.

But I had to go get my stuff that was in a cafeteria of the university that was built on a small cliff right next to the water. On the way there, I saw L___, a coworker in my real life job. She was in an aerobics class that was being held right on the front lawn of the cafeteria building.*

I went inside, and ran into my brother, B_____ in there. He went with me out to the water's edge, where I found my things in a cranny in the seaweed covered rocks.* One of my things was a collection of papers where I wrote line after line of complete nonsense many years ago. I tried to hide these under my arm, for some friends of B___'s had now joined us and I didn't want them to see what I considered to be foolish writings from my childhood.

    I woke up.
