freeway view (illus.) and descent onto Mars/Venus

The first dream is something about going to a planet that's Mars and Venus combined (dream logic).  We come in for a landing -- and the soil is red, like on Mars, but the temperature is very hot, like on Venus.  I wake up.

I go back to sleep.

I'm getting ready to go to bed in a room that dream memory tells me is mine -- indeed, I seem completely familiar with it (also, this dream was very cohesive ... everything felt and looked just like real life).  I fuss around with the three doors that lead into the room, finally shutting all three.  I go to bed, but it's daytime outside -- and my window looks right out onto a freeway with cars whizzing by.  It kind of bothers me that people can see me sleeping as they go by.

my bedroom window overlooked the freeway

Right as I'm getting settled, my annoying little alarm clock (dream memory) goes off.  I try to shut it off, but then I hear the sound of another alarm clock.

Where is it coming from? I wonder.  I note that the sound is far more piercing and shrill than the clock that I'm holding makes.  I wake up and discover it's my real life alarm clock going off.

the amazing shrinker antenna (illus.) and nightmare

I'm at the vet's with my old springer spaniel (deceased IRL).  The vet and her assistants are trying to save his life.  They roll him over on his back and open up the hide over his chest as if it was just velcroed in place.  I'm horrified when I see that instead of a ribcage, he has a endoskeleton of sorts that seems to have been fabricated out of plastic.  They open that up, and I'm even MORE horrified to see that he has very few organs left inside ... and his heart, in particular, is small and shriveled up.  The vet begins forcing his heart to pump by gently squeezing it, and I get the feeling that he is about to die.  I start crying.

C__, my sister, is there and is asking all kinds of questions.  Like "How did you get that plastic skeleton inside of him?" and, "How has he survived this long with so few internal organs?

In other words, she is asking the very things that I should be asking which would lead up to the realization that I'm dreaming, but I don't think it's a dream even for a split second ... until I wake up.

Back asleep, I'm in a new dream where a bunch of us are about to watch a "hologram interactive movie."  My interest is piqued, for IRL I'm currently writing a science fiction novel that has virtual reality as a major part of the plot.

I'm not disappointed.  I'm sent sliding through a tube that feels totally real.  I wonder how they accomplished creating such an amazing virtual reality setup.  Then, as I'm sliding, I'm suddenly eating delicious popcorn.  I wonder if my body is really eating popcorn back in the theater, or if this is an illusion, too (but how would a virtual reality setup create tastes and textures inside of your mouth?!).

Then the adventurous part of the movie begins.  A secret agent is showing us how to tap a special antenna on any device, and each tap will advance the sophistication of the device ... while making it smaller at the same time.  He demonstrates this on a machine that I don't recognize.  Metal parts shrink down as if they were made of fluid, buttons rearrange themselves into more organized rows, etc.

    the amazing shrinker antenna

"It makes everything better," he explains.  "See how this machine is shrinking in size and becoming more high tech at the same time?"  I'm amazed at how realistic the movie is -- never suspecting for a moment that not only is there no movie, but it's my brain producing the whole story and amazing special effects.

    I wake up.

    Additional Comments:

I was starting to worry that my brain was not as capable anymore of the amazing dreams I used to have when I was younger.  But the detail and image rendering of the second dream has made me feel better as far as this goes.

UFO to airplane (illus.) and shooting lightning bolts

Date of dream: Thursday, July 24, 2008

A doctor's wife has new glasses made for her every day.  I ask her if that's why the ones she has on are so stylish (the frames are semi-transparent and tinted purple).

(shift) I'm watching a video of a UFO.  But the resolution keeps changing so that it looks blocky and out of focus, and when it comes back in focus, it's changed into a small airplane (and vica versa).

was it a UFO or an airplane?

I wake up, take a Tylenol PM, and go back to sleep.

In a new dream, and near the lab down the hallway from my workplace, a tall man arrives and delivers bandaids (per my request, dream memory tells me).

I think I recognize him as the one who I saw in a shouting match with a doctor about a year before, in the hallway just outside our lab -- when I worked the overnight shift.  I take a chance and say, "You never know when you might need these band-aids -- I saw two doctors fighting outside of our lab just about a year ago, and I thought they were going to start hitting each other ... and me, too."

He looks perplexed at what I'm saying like he doesn't know why I'm talking about this with him, and he leaves.  I tell my coworkers the story, but exaggerate it a little so that they will conclude it was the same person I saw fighting a year ago.  They seem impressed, except for one coworker who is very logical about things (dream character, he was Middle Eastern, and didn't resemble anyone I work with in real life).  He dissects my story until I have to admit that I'm not sure if it was the person ... and why would they start hitting me if they were arguing with each other, anyway? (this dream was sort of precognitive -- we got news today that a resident who had rotated through our lab about THREE years ago was just killed in a motor scooter accident, and we had to look up his picture on Google news just to try and remember what he looked like).

(shift) I'm shooting large bolts of lightning out of my hands at armored tanks approaching us over the desert.  We're in a little building near the helipad of the old hospital I used to work at in S___ (IRL, it's in a verdant, green environment, not desert-like at all).

It works, the lighting causes them to blow up.  J___, someone in the environmental group I belong to in real life, is with us and I've been told I can't let her see me using my powers.  They tell me to create some kind of magical cloak so that she won't see it when I shoot lightning at the tanks.

There's a tall guy helping me, who I seem to be acquainted with, and who also has some kind of power, but I'm not clear on what it is.  He has a distinct face and isn't handsome, but isn't homely either (dream character, unfamiliar to me now that I'm awake).

My next task is to melt trays of material that have gotten stuck to each other -- they've been trying to pull them apart and they can't.  It takes me a little while, but after shooting lightning at them for a bit, I get them all apart.  By now, though, the people I'm helping are beginning to take my magical power for granted and barely acknowledge what I've just done for them.

    I wake up.
