My friend and I were standing in line at the UPS to ship a package.  I heard a faint whimper and looked around but didn't see anything except a woman standing behind us with a box at her feet on the floor.  I looked at my friend thinking maybe it was him but it wasn't so I shrugged it off and continued to wait in line.
Several seconds later we both heard a whimper again and our heads turn towards the package on the floor.  "Your package is making noise," he says to the woman.  "Mind your own business!" she snaps back.
It was our turn in line and I told the woman behind the desk that something is whimpering in that box.  She leaned over the counter to look at the box and asked the woman what was in there.  Again the woman says, "Mind your own business!"
The woman behind the desk disappears for a couple of seconds and returns with several men.  The whimpering gets louder and one of the men opens the box with a box cutter.  The woman who brought the box was screaming at him to stop because it was personal and he had no right to open her package.
The man ignores her and reaches in and pulls out a small and frightened little black puppy.
I woke up.

I'm in a hospital waiting for the ambulance to arrive.  When it does the paramedics roll out a young man in his early 20's and wheel him directly into the emergency room.
I follow behind and watch the paramedics and two hospital assistants carefully lift the young man from the stretcher and onto the bed.  I see he's immobilized on a board from the waist down because of severe damage to both his legs.
A nurse takes his vitals and I introduce myself.  He simply nods in my direction.
"Any idea where my parents are?" he asks and I reply, "They just boarded the plane and are on their way."
The nurse covers him with a sheet and ask, "Are you in any pain?"
"No, not really," says the young man.  "Will the doctor see me soon?"
The nurse answers, "He ordered for more X-rays and someone will be here any minute to do that for you, ok?"
The young man covers his eyes with his arm and moans.
"Can I get you anything?  A cup of water?"  I ask and he nods no.
Hospital staff enter the room and prepare him for X-rays.  The young man looks in my direction, "Will you be here when I get back?"
"Yes.  I'm here for as long as it takes."
He's wheeled away and I decide to wait in the hall for him to return.  A hospital security guard approaches me and ask, "Is he your son?"
"No," I answer.  "I'm a volunteer surrogate parent.  I'm here to keep him company until his parents get here.  He was injured in Afghanistan and he was flown back to the states for a last effort to save his legs.  He was caught in a roadside bombing."
The man appears shocked,"Oh my Lord!  I had no idea.  Your a nice lady for keeping him company.  How did you get involved with this program?"
I felt an overwhelming sense of sadness but I don't cry.   I take a deep breath, "My son was shot three times in Afghanistan.  He took one to the head, one to the hip and one to the thigh.  He died shortly after surgery.  I was in flight and didn't get to him in time but there was a woman who helped me with my grieving and told me she held his hand until he passed on."
The man touches my shoulder.  "I'm so sorry for your loss, ma'am."
"Thank you,"  I whisper, "This is my contribution for what she did for me and my son."
    I wake-up.

    Additional Comments:

My anxiety contributed to this dream after finding out my son enlisted himself in the Army.

    Lucid Intent? No

This dream has been viewed 246 times.

I'm in an abandoned hospital after dark with familiar faces from my dream world but not in my awake world.  We are a group of 7 people, 4 men and 3 women and gathered in the lobby so dark, drab and gloomy.  Pitch blackness except for the street lights from outside reflecting off bits and pieces of broken panes of glass still hanging in the windows and doors.  Another source of light came from the flashlights everyone carried and the beams bounce from wall to wall and down the long, endless halls until the light fades out within the darkness.

I seem to have forgotten my flashlight or misplaced it somewhere because I can't find it in anywhere on me.  I feel dopey standing here empty handed as everyone is loaded with all kinds of fun, neat gadgets like emf meters, digital voice recorders, infrared thermometers, 2-way radios and night vision cams.

Where the hell is my camera?  I have a beautiful one but I can't find it.

We agree to break-up in groups of three and the 2 girls take the hall to the left, two guys take the hall on the right and the two guys and myself are heading up the second level of this hospital.

I let them lead because they have the flashlights that light up the entire stairwell.  Surprisingly the steps are very sturdy without a creak under our feet as we ascend carefully upwards to the second level.

It seems darker up here, if possible, than downstairs. The powerful beams of the flashlights bounce up and down the walls and floors and down long immense halls revealing the decrepit state of this building.  Paint chips on the floor from the corrosion of the ceilings but not as much graffiti on these walls like downstairs.  There's lots of trash and broken bits and pieces of furniture scatter every where on the floor.

Tim, who is the meeker of the two, looks at me and says, "This place is creepy, man.  I felt a presents follow us all the way up the stairs."
Adam says, "Well, what are we waiting for, bro? Let's get this investigation started. Where do you want to start?"

Tim points towards the hall behind me, "Let's start this way."
We slowly walk down the hall carefully looking through each room we pass.  I see street lights glow through the windows from inside the rooms and I can't tell if there's glass in them but there is a certain slight breeze that flows through the hall from all directions enough to leave a chill up my spine.  Maybe it's something else like a spirit?
I hear our feet shuffle along the floor and paint chips and debris crackle with every step.
Adam stops and shush us. "Do you hear footsteps?"
"Yeah," whispers Tim.  "It sounds like it's behind us or next to us."

I didn't hear anything except for us but maybe I was distracted by the lights outside?

Just as we are about to walk on there's heavy footsteps down the hall that sounds like it's running away from us.

We are stunned at first but we quickly gather our senses and chase after the sound.  When the footsteps stop, so do we and the guys take out their emf meters and digital voice recorders and start to ask questions.

    "Is there anyone here?"
    *Pause*
    "Why are you running?"
    *Pause*

Adam takes out his 2-way radio and speaks into it. "Doug?"
    *Yes, Adam?*
"Are you on the east end wing?"
    *Yep.  What's up?*
"We're hearing what sounds like someone running down the hall.  Are you hearing any of this?"

*No, not really.  I think you just confirmed to us that the noises we're hearing is you guys running down the hall.*
    "OK. Thank you."

Is that movement I see in that last room down the hall?  It looks like a dark shadowy figure but I'm not sure?

I watch it move out of the room and down the stairs at the end of the hall.

"There! Right there!"  I yell!  "Something ran out of that room and down those stairs!"

We run to end of the hall and down the stairs.  From the top of the stairs I see a door closing down below.

"It ran through that door!" I yell.

We rush to the door and find ourselves outside from what looks like a courtyard.  I hear feet pounding on pavement ahead of us and I run towards that.

What are we chasing?  It's almost clear to me.

The figure ducks down behind a half barrel planter which was illuminated by a nearby streetlight.

"Hey, guys!"  I yell.  "It's some guy in dark clothes and a black cap!"

    We stop running.

Tim says, "It's some skinny guy!"

Adam speaks into the 2-way radio, "We just chased some guy wearing dark clothes out of the building and into the court yard and he's now hiding behind a planter."
     *You can see him?*
     "Yep.  Looking at him now."
*UHHH...Tell this guy he's on private property and needs to leave.*

Adam yells out, "Hey!  You need to leave!  This is private property and you can't be here!"

The figure runs to another door and is back inside the building.

Adam speaks into the 2-way radio, "Doug?  The guy just ran back into the building!  Repeat, the guy is in the building!"
*OK, lets meet back at the base now!*

We return to the building and are in an office we are using as a "base".  We have all our equipment here like monitors and computers all set up and operating.

Doug and his partner Al is here and Doug speaks, "OK, I just called the police and they informed me that there was a hold-up at a convenience store at gun point just down the road about an hour ago and witnesses described him as 5"9, 175lbs and dressed in black clothing with a baseball cap.  They also said he fled the scene by foot towards this area and is armed and considered dangerous.  I sent the girls out of the building and into the van for safety and we're waiting for the police to arrive."
Al says, "You guys can lock yourselves in this room and watch the monitors for any signs of this guy or you can wait outside with the girls.  I don't care what you do.  We won't judge you no matter what but it's all up to you."

"I'll stay and watch the monitors,"  I said.

Adam says, "Yeah, were safe locked up in here.  We'll watch the monitors.  Are you ok with that Tim?"
Tim is uptight but says, "Yeah, sure"
"Good." says Doug.  We're going to wait for the police to arrive and we'll be right back.
They leave the room and Adam locks the door.  We stand around the monitors and look for this guy.

"Hey!  There he is on camera 4,"  says Tim as he points to the screen.
"Oh, yeah," says Adam.  " That's the cafeteria, right?"
    "Yes." Tim and I respond.
"One of us should tell the officers where he's hiding," says Adam.  "I'll go if you want to keep your eyes on him incase he leaves."
Tim and I nod in agreement and Adam left.
Tim looks very nervous and walks away from the monitors and lights up a cigarette.
"Tim?  Are you OK?"  I ask.
Tim looks towards me very jumpy and says, "Man, this place is giving me the creeps!  Something is not right here and I can't take anymore of this!"
I say very calmly, "Tim, everything is going to be fine.  Lets just keep our eyes on this guy and the..."
Tim ran out the door yelling, "Fuck this!  I'm getting the hell out of here!"

What a douche bag!  Leaving me here all alone!

I watch one monitor and I see an officer with his gun drawn moving slowly towards the cafeteria.  Through another monitor the suspect hears the officer and pulls out what appears to be a gun and walks through another door and out of the monitors site.  The officer is unaware of this as he enters the room.  I search all the cams hoping to catch a glimpse of the guy as this officer clears the cafeteria.  The officer finds the same door the suspect used and now both are out of view.

Where can they be?  Where does that door lead?

I find the suspect on one of the cams set up in the west end hall and he finds a room with an open door and hides behind it.  The officer is unaware and coming near.  I see clearly for the first time that the officer is a young woman with blond hair in a ponytail behind her head.  She is very petite looking behind her drawn weapon as she slowly creeps down the hall towards the suspect.
The suspect stands by the door with his gun in his hand waiting for the officer to walk by.
He must hear her coming because the paint chips on the floor must be crackling under her feet!
Oh my God he's going to kill her!  I need to do something!  What can I do?
I run out of the office and up the stairs to the second floor.  I can catch the suspect from the stairwell on the opposite side and throw something at him.  I grab a piece of a broken chair from the floor and run towards the end of the hall in the darkness feeling ahead of myself for a doorway and quietly I tiptoe down the stairs.
I shuffle my feet towards the doorway and peek around the frame and just in time because the officer is about 6 feet away from the room the suspect is hiding in and he's about to jump out and shoot her.
I throw the broken piece of chair at him and it hits the floor at his feet.
This spooks him and he runs out of the room and into the hall.  The officer yells, "Stop! Get on the ground!"
He fires at her and hit's her in the chest.  She immediately fires back and hit's him in the stomach as he fires a second round that lands in the center of her forehead and she drops immediately.
The suspect drops his gun and falls to his knees moaning in pain.
I approach him and kick his gun away.  He looks up at me, screams and runs back in the room.  He looks back at me and screams, "Oh my God!"  and jumps out the window!
I lean out the window and yell, "What the hell is wrong with you?  You just shot a cop!"
He only falls one story and is on the ground moaning in pain.
I run to the police officer's side.  I hear high pitch squeals and shallow breathes and it doesn't sound good.  I yell, "Help!  Help!  Officer down!"
A male officer runs down the hall and shine his flashlight over her.  "Oh, no!  No!  No! No!"  He grabs his radio, "Officer down!  Officer down!"
I lean over her body as she takes her last breath and I close my eyes and cry.
    What have I done?
Seconds later I feel a tap on my shoulder and I turn and look up.
It's the female officer!  I stand and stare into her blue eyes.
"Are you an Angel?" she ask.
    I stutter, "No."
She looks down at her body and ask, "Am I dead?"
I step away from her and say, "Yes.  You passed away."
She looks at me and ask, "Are you dead too?"
I realize we are no longer in darkness.  The hall is dully lit and I look down to see the hospital gown I am wearing.
Ohhhhhh!  That's right!  I am dead!
I take her hand and we walk towards the light.
"Yes.  I died in this hospital many years ago."
     I awake...
