My friend and I were standing in line at the UPS to ship a package.  I heard a faint whimper and looked around but didn't see anything except a woman standing behind us with a box at her feet on the floor.  I looked at my friend thinking maybe it was him but it wasn't so I shrugged it off and continued to wait in line.
Several seconds later we both heard a whimper again and our heads turn towards the package on the floor.  "Your package is making noise," he says to the woman.  "Mind your own business!" she snaps back.
It was our turn in line and I told the woman behind the desk that something is whimpering in that box.  She leaned over the counter to look at the box and asked the woman what was in there.  Again the woman says, "Mind your own business!"
The woman behind the desk disappears for a couple of seconds and returns with several men.  The whimpering gets louder and one of the men opens the box with a box cutter.  The woman who brought the box was screaming at him to stop because it was personal and he had no right to open her package.
The man ignores her and reaches in and pulls out a small and frightened little black puppy.
I woke up.

I'm in a hospital waiting for the ambulance to arrive.  When it does the paramedics roll out a young man in his early 20's and wheel him directly into the emergency room.
I follow behind and watch the paramedics and two hospital assistants carefully lift the young man from the stretcher and onto the bed.  I see he's immobilized on a board from the waist down because of severe damage to both his legs.
A nurse takes his vitals and I introduce myself.  He simply nods in my direction.
"Any idea where my parents are?" he asks and I reply, "They just boarded the plane and are on their way."
The nurse covers him with a sheet and ask, "Are you in any pain?"
"No, not really," says the young man.  "Will the doctor see me soon?"
The nurse answers, "He ordered for more X-rays and someone will be here any minute to do that for you, ok?"
The young man covers his eyes with his arm and moans.
"Can I get you anything?  A cup of water?"  I ask and he nods no.
Hospital staff enter the room and prepare him for X-rays.  The young man looks in my direction, "Will you be here when I get back?"
"Yes.  I'm here for as long as it takes."
He's wheeled away and I decide to wait in the hall for him to return.  A hospital security guard approaches me and ask, "Is he your son?"
"No," I answer.  "I'm a volunteer surrogate parent.  I'm here to keep him company until his parents get here.  He was injured in Afghanistan and he was flown back to the states for a last effort to save his legs.  He was caught in a roadside bombing."
The man appears shocked,"Oh my Lord!  I had no idea.  Your a nice lady for keeping him company.  How did you get involved with this program?"
I felt an overwhelming sense of sadness but I don't cry.   I take a deep breath, "My son was shot three times in Afghanistan.  He took one to the head, one to the hip and one to the thigh.  He died shortly after surgery.  I was in flight and didn't get to him in time but there was a woman who helped me with my grieving and told me she held his hand until he passed on."
The man touches my shoulder.  "I'm so sorry for your loss, ma'am."
"Thank you,"  I whisper, "This is my contribution for what she did for me and my son."
    I wake-up.

    Additional Comments:

My anxiety contributed to this dream after finding out my son enlisted himself in the Army.

I'm at a party in a small mobile home.
I have no idea what we're celebrating or who's home this is but it's getting crowed fast and becomes standing room only.
Everyone appears to be having a good time with drinks in every hand and laughter filling the air.  I don't know or recognize anyone and it seems almost impossible to even try because there's so many people.
The mobile home begins to rock and everyone is loosing balance and there's some screaming.  The home tips forward and hits the ground and everyone is tossed, including myself.  I'm fortunate because I was leaning against the far wall before it tipped and I landed on top of the pile of people.
With all the screaming nobody heard the windows shatter as a man wearing a bright red tee-shirt enters and he's holding a rifle.  He steps across and over people and stops on top of one person and aims his rifle and fires a shot.  Everyone's screaming and nobody can get up without making their situation worst.
The gunman works his way to another person, aims his rifle and fires two more shots.  He's wearing a fanny pac and he reaches in and pulls out more bullets to load his rifle.
I see a tipped over coffee table and I manage to crawl to it and stand on top of it.  I know I'm crushing and hurting people but I just want to get out and nearby was the broken window.  I leap towards it and slip through and land on the ground hard.
As I stand there's other people who manage to escape with me and we scatter in different directions.
As I run I can hear the rifle going off and I'm wondering, "Why is he shooting only certain people and not at everyone?  I didn't do anything so he wouldn't shoot me."
I run along the sidewalk and I'm about a block away before I look behind me and I see nobody.  Relief.  I continue to run for another block before looking over my shoulder again.  In the distance I see a bright red shirt moving in my direction.
I panic and without looking at what's before me I crash into tables and chairs that are set up on the sidewalk outside a restaurant.
I feel pain in my leg and I force myself up.  The Gunman is now only a block away and the rifle is in his hand.
"Is he coming for me?  Why?  What did I do?"
I feel panic as I limp to the restaurant's front door and turn the knob but it's locked.  I hear the man's feet pounding the pavement, getting closer and closer and I know I'm screwed.  I slouch down against the door and squeeze my eyes close as the man stops before me.
I scream at myself to wake-up!  Wake-up before this man kills me!
Finally I do wake-up with my heart pounding.  Thank God!
