It is night time and dark I find myself in a dream version of a large American city which has vague elements of places I know from England and where I currently live about it. I’m walking some deserted streets in a rundown part of the town on the edge of the city.
I don’t feel so safe being out so late at night even though the streets are completely empty, I decide to head back to the apartment where I am staying in order to be safe indoors. As I get back nearer to the rear entrance to the block of flats I see a white van pass by me heading in the direction of the residents garages, the vehicle is the kind a plumber or electrician might use to go about their work.
When I get to the rear of the building I see that one of the garage doors is swung up with the lights on and with lots of tools lying about on the work benches. It must be about midnight and I wonder what’s going on and who on earth can be working at this time of night.
I go over to the back door which gives access into the building where I am staying and find a man doing some kind of work near the steps leading up to the front door, I’m puzzled and intrigued so I ask the man what he is doing.
The man is friendly and is half American and half Italian he explains to me that he has fitted a lightning conductor way up on the roof and is in the process of putting a kind of earth or grounding plate beneath the doorsteps, he has had to dig up the steps here in order to accomplish this.
I’m intrigued as I watch him place a strange chunky copper buckle into the earth under the steps, this very real looking clasp which seems to be under some kind of sprung tension is what is linked to the lightening rod via a long length of cable or copper strip which passes up the exterior of the building.
Looking at the chunky copper buckle it vaguely reminds me of the ratchet like clasps that are used to secure the tarpaulins on huge articulated 18 wheel trucks. I continue to watch the man finishing of his work and wonder to myself if the man isn’t making these preparations because he is expecting a thunder storm tonight.

Interpretation: I was woken up by my wife snoring last night between 2am and 3am, I took the
opportunity to memorize all of my dreams up to this point but when I fell back asleep I slept very
solidly right through till 7am. Between 2am and 7am it was like I was in a very refreshing void of
nothingness, I only hazily recalled a very vague dream about being a child in a group of other children
being looked after by a motherly figure, I awoke feeling extremely revitalized and rested. It was
strange how all of my dreams seemed to revolve around America last night, each of the three dreams
mentioned here were heavily infused with the usual American feeling that accompanies such dreams. I
have read that lightening can represent very positive transformation and changes, the house in the
dream might represent me I guess and the American/Italian man might represent a combination of
pioneer spirit, opportunity and creativity. The dream had a very positive edge to it as did all of the
other dreams from this night but it was also tinged with a high tension like the rest of the dreams too.
Dream 1: The pinball repair shop – It is late evening time and I find myself in my dream version of
America (just like in the previous dream). I am walking some quiet out of the way streets in a rundown
part of a city, I cross over a deserted road and enter inside a small bare shop where I meet an older
man and woman who are possibly husband and wife and who own and run the store. The interior looks
virtually empty and the pastel green paint peels from the walls, the lady immediately starts chatting
with me and explains that she and her partner have just managed to sell or rent out a property they
own just over on the other side of the street. Apparently a lawyer who is new to the area has moved in
to this property in order to open his bureau, the lady seems kind of proud and excited that she has
managed to find such a respected and up market tenant. The lady then explains to me that her line of
business is in pinball machines and that she and her partner repair them for a living. She takes out
some components and places them on a table explaining that they only use original components which
they refurbish, these items are scarce and rare but are the simply the best. After the chat I head off
out into the empty streets and walk to the centre of the city where the tall skyscrapers are. I pause
right in the centre of the city looking up at these immensely tall buildings, some kind of special light
show or film show is being projected up onto the skyscrapers effectively using them as a kind of
enormous screen. The animation is of a pinball table being played, all of the features are being lit up
with all manner of digital displays showing scores, special features etc. Suddenly a message comes up
on the gargantuan opaque scoreboard which I realize is for me. The words “Go for the Extra Ball!” pass
by from left to right in digitized orange pixels, the message passes by over and over again as if crying
out for my attention.
Dream 3: My wife embarrasses me at the gym – Daytime and I find myself in my dream version of
America again I am heading out to visit a gym, I am aware that my wife is going to be there. I enter
the gym and see her sat on an exercise bicycle gossiping with lots of other women, I seem to
immediately know that my wife is speaking badly about me and in a negative way to the other women.
I walk on over without her noticing and lean against one of the bicycles whilst she continues to gossip
about me. She hasn’t noticed me which seems unbelievable considering my proximity, and even when
she does see me she just turns and continues to put me down in front of all the other women, this
leaves me feeling very upset, hurt and betrayed. I get the impression that she thought I would get fed
up of the insults and just leave the gym but I feel adamant to stay and exercise. I sit down on the floor
and lace up my running shoes and then walk over to two large glass swinging doors which lead into the
room where the treadmills are. When I get into the room though I see lots of business women and men
stood around as if they were having a kind of informal meeting or coffee break. It looks like I won’t be
able to exercise here after all as the room is booked for something else, I start to become a bit
frustrated and annoyed. Suddenly a woman with a masculine parted black haircut comes over to me, I
recognize her as an old work colleague, but when I look again I see that I must have been mistaken as
it wasn’t her after all (or perhaps she transformed?) but now there is a different woman with much the
same lean build, milky white tanned features but now with light blonde hair. The more I look at the
woman’s face the more I try to wrack my memory for where I’ve seen or met her before (this was a
very lucid tangible moment where my waking self was really struggling to try and figure out where I’d
seen this woman before). Unfortunately I just cannot manage to place her face as memorable as it is
which is very frustrating (even to me now). The blonde haired woman is the trainer in charge of the
treadmills she seems friendly and sympathizes to a degree with my predicament. She asks me “What
do you really want?” and “How much longer are you willing to put up with these conditions?” as we
converse “2 years” is also mentioned possibly by me. Even though the lady was trying to help I decide
I don’t want to talk about this awkward topic any longer and I pull myself away in a irritated by the
previous situation with my wife and the not being able to use the treadmills, even before I flounce off
out of the gym I start to feel very bad at just walking away from the lady as she was being friendly and
was only trying to help me, I never meant to be rude to her.

It is daytime and I find myself at an unfamiliar house near a beautiful forest in the countryside, the house is extremely special something like a low lying tree house or a large bohemian folk style open plan property supported on wooden trunk like stilts.
The unusual, eccentric but very welcoming property is owned by an older woman who has invited me to come and stay with her. The lady is a very productive artist whose home also serves as her studio and workshop she is going to teach me the ways of her art.
The woman dresses a little like a man and I get the impression that she always dresses like this in old trousers, jumpers and shirts etc. The woman is quite pretty but I sense that she has a tough butch nature and is firm and quite serious in a no nonsense kind of way.
As she goes about preparing her art equipment for the day’s work I stroll around her workshop looking at all of her tools and kit. I come across something which looks like a small circular hot plate it looks like the kind of thing one would cook pancakes on.
I don’t know what the object is so I ask the woman if this is what she mixes her pigments and oils on. She says no although my guess seemed to be in the right track, she explains that it’s actually where she mixes up the ground and size for priming her canvases.
The woman’s replies are a little terse and I wonder if she is a bit off with me for some reason or for something I’ve done or if it’s just her character and she is always like this.
I try to strike up a conversation that I think might interest her or attract her attention and maybe even get her chatting a bit more. I propose using honey as a binding agent for some powdery blue pigment and go so far as to suggest doing the mixing on the hot plate, she keeps silent almost stern and I worry if I’ve annoyed her by sharing such an idea.
(I seemed to be indirectly trying to suggest using her hot plate to mix not just the primer on but also the paint too, in fact I try suggesting this a couple of times. The hot plate seems like a bit of a sensitive topic though so after a few tries I decide not to push it.
The woman settles down to her daily art but before doing so she hands me a sheet of pleasantly tactile rough watercolor paper, the sheet has a stunningly beautiful rendering of a cat walking from left to right near some steps leading up to the front door of a house (all of the emphasis is on the steps and the rest of the house is barely if at all rendered).
The picture is done entirely with one shade of medium red aquarelle pencil the kind that can be given a light wash with a brush and water after sketching to soften the image. The picture is stunning and very realistic and life like, the cat’s fur seems to be made from countless tiny wispy red flames giving the cat an ethereal, fiery and mythological aura.
As I focus more intently on the drawing I am amazed and can’t believe the detail, it seems almost alive. Looking more closely I see what appear to be panes of watery glass slowly pushing and coming to the fore, they appear in the background behind the cat. The glass is the rippled kind that makes whatever is behind it appear obscure and blurred.
The drawing is quite magnificent but also only half finished, much of the front part of the cat’s body is incomplete or fragmentary with only a light outline and rendering.
I can tell that the way the stern woman handed me the sketch she intends for this to be my first lesson with her, it is now up to me to finish off the drawing that she started.
Additional Comments:
Interpretation: I really enjoyed this dream the setting was very pleasant and also very new and
unfamiliar, the art teacher was a bit tough though or difficult to read but she seemed nice. The dream
has a lot to do with my trying to get motivated and start drawing again with lots of easy to notice words
and symbolism such as: the stove like hot plate to cook something new up with, the ground and primer
to get things started, the honey mixed with the pigment to sweeten things up and make the prospect
more tantalizing perhaps, the steps are the first steps and finally the fiery cat very much reminded me
of a phoenix so perhaps there is an element of trying to rekindle my art and have something of a
renewal. The special tree house studio was really great (probably something I’d quite like in real life!)
I’m not quite sure what it represents though but the fact that it was raised up off the floor on stilts might
have something to do with raising ones self up above bothersome worries in order to work at another
level unhindered?
Dream 2: I think you’ve called a wrong number? – I’m outdoors in a vague area near to a sea front, I
suddenly receive a call on my mobile telephone and answer it. A woman at the other end asks for a
man with a very regular sounding name, his first name is David and his surname is very common
although I can’t seem to remember it now even though it was quite clear from within the dream. I tell
the woman that I think she has dialed a wrong number as I don’t know anybody with this name, the
woman keeps asking for the man by name though. She actually becomes extremely insistent and
keeps demanding to speak with the man, I pick up some information from the woman that the man she
is trying to get a hold of is on some kind of probation and needs to return to the authorities in order to
show he hasn’t absconded or is still in the area. The matter seems quite urgent or important to the
woman as she is some kind of secretary responsible for making sure of the man’s whereabouts. I
haven’t a clue what she is talking about or who the man is but I feel compassionate towards her so I
call over to my Mum who also happens to be my grandmother (my Mum’s Mum??) in a composite
merged into one kind of way. The mother figure has her back to me and is leaning over some railings
near to the sea front and looking out to sea, I call out to her asking if she has ever heard of the man
before but she doesn’t turn around and only gives out a half hearted reply saying she’s never heard of
him either.
Dream 3: Computer failure imminent – I find myself in a vaguely familiar large dream bedroom sat at
a computer, the PC has just crashed giving a rather stark minimal kind of blue screen warning that my
computer is on the verge of suffering a fatal memory error. On screen instructions tell me that the
problem can be resolved by restarting the computer over again from scratch, it is suggested or perhaps
more imposed on me that I should play some video games on a console whilst this lengthy process
takes place in order to wind down and be more at ease. (This dream is probably saying something
about lightening up and having more fun or else I will probably end up having a breakdown).
Dream 4: Drum sticks – I see a drummer sat at set of drums inside something like a dark night club he
seems to be the focal point and perhaps the only musician performing on the stage. He plays a few of
the drums with his sticks but only sparingly. For most of his performance he actually knocks and clacks
the drum sticks together making a rhythm and music with them instead of with his drums, the music is
quite clever and pleasant and certainly adds an extra dimension or sound to his playing.
