Daytime and I find myself in what feels a little like my Nan’s small utility room. The side door which leads out onto the avenue is open and I see two burly Mediterranean work men in white overalls making their way in and out from my Nan’s house, they appear to be doing some kind of painting and decorating or small renovation work for my Nan.Its dinner time and the two men are just about to pop outside to their van to take their lunch, I follow after them and see that one of the men has a folded newspaper in his hands and has just started doing the daily crossword puzzle.
The dark haired, moustachioed and stubbly tanned man asks his mate “1 Across a Spanish Navigator with 9 letters”, the friend hums and ahs about the puzzle whilst I ponder the conundrum too. Suddenly I seem to realize the significance of the situation and that the two men must be Portuguese and hence assume that the navigator the man is searching for in his crossword puzzle is also Portuguese. I almost consider and am just about to tell the man the navigator he is looking for is Vasco da Gama but from within the dream I realise that this name is too long.
But it suddenly comes to me in a flash that the navigators name is “Carallina” (or “Carollina”). I tell the man the name but I realise that I must appear to be something of a dream spirit or ghost as they cannot see or hear me.

Thoughts: I had lots of dreams last night which makes it difficult which one to choose to focus on especially as many of them have recurring symbolism. The above dream seemed quite real and vivid I wasn’t particularly lucid but there was an element of involvement and of realism to the rather ordinary situation that was most striking. On reflection there appears to be many details in all of this nights dreams concerning my attempts at becoming lucid such as the giant purple scarab beetle who wanted to climb into bed and whose wings were tattered in Dream 1, then in Dream 2 there was my step Dad’s fancy coffee machine, the coffee being a great symbol for wanting to be more ‘awake’, Dream 3 had my cousin trying to help me set up a new bed and even the navigator mentioned in the above dream has an element of exploring unchartered territory or waters which is very much how I think of dreaming. The theme of dogs which appeared in Dream 4 which has been something of a rare of unfamiliar symbol for me is cropping up quite lot just recently and is something for me to explore further, the petrol station in Dream 5 is yet another recurring symbol and the repaired road in Dream 6 could easily be the road which was dug up in one of my recent dreams called ‘25,000 years in captivity.’ from Thursday the 18th September 2008. The ‘Family Suicides’ dream was quite shocking and not at all related to anything in waking life, at some level I feel that this dream is about two particular archetypes which I am trying to let go of and move away from in order to be more independent and self governing.Dream 1: The giant purple seaside scarab – Daytime and I find myself at a stereotypical English seaside town I am on a sloping concrete landing area surrounded by some snack and souvenir shops and a few rock pools which lead down to the beach and sea proper. I feel slightly younger as if a teen or in my early twenties or maybe I possibly feel immature, I am accompanied by older people whom may well be family. I have somehow (and this will sound absolutely gross) trodden bare foot into some dog mess, I try to somehow remove it but only make matters worse by getting it all over my hands. I get into a bit of a fluster and panic before one of the older people I am with tells me to pop into the nearby snack café to use their toilet facilities to wash myself. I do as instructed and walk on inside being carefully not to get the mess all over the floor but just as I’m about to enter the washroom the owner of the café calls over to me and tells me that customers aren’t allowed to use the toilet facilities without making a purchase first. I feel cross about this but there is nothing I can do, I consider buying a drink but feel it seems unfair so I just decide to go back outside. Outdoors I suddenly have the brainwave that all I need do is just go over to a rock pool and swill my foot and hand off there. I do this and it works well but to do a proper job I go down to the sea and really manage to clean off the last of the dog muck. The washing off of the muck in the sea is the perfect solution but there would appear to be one drawback, it leaves me with a very salty taste in my mouth (???). After having cleaned up I go back over to where the unfamiliar family members are relaxing, I suddenly witness a totally surreal and slightly unsettling sight. Scuttling across the concrete courtyard is a huge shiny metallic purple scarab beetle the creature is easily the size of large round coffee table. I watch as the beetle scuttles over towards an old worldly Bed & Breakfast and clambers up the exterior wall and tries to climb in through an open bedroom window, I sense that beetle wants to crawl into bed and go to sleep. Unfortunately just as the beetle is about to clamber through the window it loses its footing (or maybe footings!) and fall down onto the courtyard below with a clatter. The creature is completely stranded upside down on its back with its legs wriggling in the air, a group of young children come over to taunt and tease the poor thing with sticks. The creature does eventually manage to right itself and scuttle away but the children persist in whacking and prodding the beetle, I can see that just beneath the scarabs beautiful shell it actually has some delicate purple wings which look quite tattered.
Dream 2: Shown how to make stronger coffee – Daytime and I find myself in what feels like my Mum’s kitchen only this location appears to be in a second floor room, its morning time and I appear to have woken up and am trying to make myself a cup of coffee. Nobody is about so I go about finding a mug and the coffee, on the worktop I see that my stepfather has bought an unusual new coffee percolator or espresso machine which looks very flash and fancy and a bit scientific sort of like lab equipment with tall glass phials and filters, it actually resembles a Galilean thermometer a little. I’m not quite sure how it works but decide to give it ago anyway, I tip some ground coffee into the top where the filter is and push the button to start it. Almost immediately very light brown coloured water starts to pour out into my mug and I realise that I must have done something wrong so I quickly switch it off again. Just then my step Dad comes into the room and sees what I am up to and offers to make me a cup, he proudly tells me that he recently bought this coffee machine such is his love of coffee. As he shows me how to makes a proper cup of coffee using the machine and as the dark black liquid slowly drips into my cup he explains that his coffee machine cost £247, I think to myself “Wow, now that is real dedication from a coffee connoisseur”.
Dream 3: Cousin helps with new bed moving – Daytime and I find myself in a long ground floor corridor of an apartment block where I am apparently living, I can see from where I am stood the apartment block leads out onto a busy sunlit street of a bustling Chinatown quarter of a big city. The downstairs is an absolute hive of activity with families (all oriental I note) with screaming children going in and out with lots of other comings and goings on too, the hallway is a complete clutter with all sort of brick-a-brack and children’s toys lying about. Just then I see my cousin (the one who used to be a bit wild in my dreams) he is accompanied by his Mum’s (my aunts) ex-girlfriend (the one who is quite butch and manly and who I’ve dreamt of on a number of occasions before). I watch as they struggle to carry a huge mattress and bed down the cramped and cluttered hallway, my cousin gives me a cheery “Hello cuz!” and goes to make his way upstairs with the new bedding whilst trying to avoid tripping over the toys and clutter laying all over the floor and stairs. I’m surprised by my cousins maturity and grown upness, and it suddenly dawns on me that I have just recently moved into the apartment block and my cousin is helping me move all of my belongings up to my new flat.
Dream 4: Doggy and catty with the mother of the tattooed family – Daytime and I find myself in the completely unfamiliar house of a very interesting lady. I sit on the sofa with this woman in her upstairs lounge but in-between us is sat a small stocky and muscly little black Staffordshire bull terrier. I feel slightly uneasy in the dog’s presence but it seems remarkably well behaved and disciplined and not at all aggressive or frightening, still I feel that I have to be on guard. The strange thing about the lady is that she is extremely intelligent and intellectual and very Zen too but the rest of her family is quite, quite unlike her, its almost as if there is some kind of mismatch of intellects here. Although the lady’s family aren’t present I understand that her husband and children have something of a penchant for tattoos in fact its their big passion in life and their body’s are virtually covered from head to toe in colourful oriental style tattoos. The lady reaches over and takes a music CD from a rack and goes to put it on her music centre, I inquisitively cast an eye over the compact disc case and see that the music is sort of New Age like and folk style it reminds me of legends, myths and fairy tales. Just then my pet cat comes into the room and the dog that was sat between us gets down off the sofa and goes over to investigate the cat. I quickly get off the sofa and down onto my hands and knees just in case I need to avert a furry conflict, although there is a tiny little bit of tension fortunately there is no need for me to intervene though as they are just sniffing one another and familiarising themselves.
Dream 5: Petrol station girl talk – I am outdoors in a suburban area it feels like a peculiar time of the day not morning or night but sort of twilight or dawn, I am walking towards an American style gas station in a slight daze dressed in a pair of peculiarly long shorts and t-shirt whilst carrying a virtually empty bowl of breakfast cereals. I head into the petrol station and lean over the shoulder of a younger biker couple who are looking at the magazines on a display shelf, I see that all of the magazines are identical and are all about motorcycles. The cover story on these journals describes a large review of many small low capacity 50cc engined sports mopeds. After wandering around the inside of the gas station a little aimlessly I drift back out again, as I cross the forecourt I see a group of young females gossiping in a girly teeny sort of way about me. I turn to see what they might be talking about, they seem very bashful I get the impression that they are laughing at my peculiar shorts but also that one of them wants to ask me out on a date. I don’t feel very much with it and am a little dazed or sleepy so I continue on my way.
Dream 6: Road repairs ‘Keep Clear’ – Daytime and I find myself walking along an unfamiliar street in a newly developed city. I cross over a road which has been freshly laid, the tarmac is still soft and slightly tacky with strong smell of hot tar and asphalt filling the air. Suddenly some work men call out to me warning me of a huge road maintenance vehicle which is reversing just near to me, I turn and suddenly see the huge vehicle bearing down on top of me. I nearly get run over and squashed but manage to hop out of the way just in time and onto the pavement. From the sidewalk I catch my breath and composure and look all about me, the two builders who warned me shake their heads from side to side as if I were really clumsy and careless. Looking all about me I see that the whole town is a buzz with activity of workmen and builders renovating absolutely everything from roads and buildings and some are in fact creating entirely new buildings such as a magnificent domed one some way off in the distance.
Dream 7: Family suicides – Daytime and I find myself at my Nan’s house, something shocking and horrible has happened and lots of family members are packed into the kitchen some who I recognise and others who are unfamiliar to me. I try to peer over the group to see what is going on but can’t see anything so I ask an unfamiliar dream family member what is going on and they explain that my Nan has committed suicide, “Impossible” I think to myself but this is what would seem to have taken place. I’m even more horrified to discover that my Nan cut her throat with a small kitchen knife and in a flash I see the awful scene of my Nan sat slumped in her armchair with a terrible deep slice wound in her neck. I still don’t want to it believe but one of the dream family members turns and hands me a piece of writing paper and says “Look, your father is about to do the same too”. In my frantic state I quickly snatch the letter out of the person’s hands to read it and discover that it is my father’s suicide note the one he plans to leave behind after he has killed himself.
Dream 9: Dream chatting about the dreams I’ve just dreamt – In a vague environment I’m chatting with a close friend about the dreams I have just had, I can’t say that I am fully lucid but there is a Ping-Pong like back and forth duality where there is an element of “Is this or isn’t this a dream?” The dream is obviously so convincing that I eventually don’t doubt that I am dreaming and continue to go along with the flow.
