I was sitting on the edge of a creek bank with a class of people. We were listening to our teacher
who was a cross between Mr. Barneson (my high school Spanish teacher) and Mr. Bills (my college
Biology teacher). He had given everyone a worksheet to fill out about the niche of the creek we were
at, and he also had an overhead with a screen that he projected pictures on. The creek was unique in
that it had red banks, and I remember as we walked to sit down next to its waters' edge, my teacher
pulled out a copy of Of Mice and Men and compared the color of the earth next to the creek's bank to
the red clay of the creek bank in that novel.
As he lectured us, we were being timed on how quickly we could fill out our worksheet/test study
guide. I was distracted by the area we were at, so I only got part of my worksheet filled out, plus
it was kind of dark and hard to see the paper. Essentially, other people filled out more than me.
The teacher called time and we handed in our worksheets. Nick Ryan was sitting near me.
We started walking through town by Vallombrosa and down 2nd Street. Then it got really dark. I could
not see, and I was walking alone toward the train tracks down by 9th Street. There were two of them
across the road. I train had come by and stopped over the tracks. There were no railroad signs to
get in the way of my blind walking and I ended up stepping over the joint between two train cars,
and leaping onto the joint of the second train that had stopped. I leaped off of them and kept
walking blindly forward. I was trying to find the Oroville Airport.
There was a field of hay or wheat that had been cut down that I began walking through. There were
sounds of farm animals off in the distance. I got to the center of the field and felt a big pile of
hay or something, and I could vaguely see the outline of it. Then all the dogs and farm animals
started making noises because they knew I was there. It scared me so I headed North. I knew I was
too far south of the airport and needed to go that way anyway.
As I walked North, the golden valley's width grew narrower. There were brown hills on either side of
it. The hills on the right were higher than the hills on the left. Also on the left-hand side was a
highway with car headlights on it. It was becoming very faintly the twilight of sunrise; the sky was
still a very dark grey but I could tell the color of things like the hills and the valley.
Then I noticed that ahead of me in the middle of the valley was a concrete structure that was
nothing but looped roads and pillars with no walls. I climbed into it because I noticed a light. On
the furthest corner on the left side up a couple stories was a desk, and a light, and two girls one
about 19 and the other maybe 20-21 who were arguing. One girl was crying. I could tell that they
were typical Chico girls right from the get-go. They were sisters and they were arguing about
something one of them did to their Dad. I don't remember what specifically it was.
I stood there and watched, but I ended up getting pulled into the conversation even though I wasn't
involved. As that happened, I noticed that there was a dark figure observing us three from across
the room. They were standing on their own pinnacle silently, just watching. This observer made me
feel uncomfortable, and I wished that I had not been pulled into their conversation, that I could do
as this Observer was doing and just watch. Then my alarm went off.
