I was listening to the radio in my car, when the emergecy alert buzzer sounded. The announcer was talking about a deadly heat wave that was affecting large parts of the country and was giving advice on how to stay cool without using electricity, since blackouts were occurring due to such unusually high demand. Hundreds of people were dying. Freedom leaned forward and said, "See this is why underground is good." Then he suggested haning white trash bags over the gardens to reflect back some of the heat so the plants didn't wilt. I thought it was a good idea, so I stopped at Lowe's to buy some bags. When I walked in, though, everything shifted and I found myself back in time at some saloon. I had the feeling it was somewhere south, because people had thick accents. A man was sitting at a bar, talking to a woman (I think she was a prostitute). He motioned for me to join them, and offered me a drink. He poured something called "Red Bourbon" (I'll have to look that up..) and asked me why I had come. I told him I was looking for bags to put over my garden and he started laughing hysterically. I was about to leave, when the woman stopped me and asked me to follow her. The man shot me a look, and said, "You best pay for her services", so I told him that I wasn't going with her for that.. just to talk. He didn't believe me, and sent a man with us to make sure. I shrugged and followed the woman upstairs. As soon as we got to the top of the stairs, I recognized the place.. it's the red hallway (red hallway is a recurring theme). We go into the first door and she sits on the bed and lights a candle. I sit in a chair in the corner, and the man just stands by the door. The woman pulls a garter off her leg and hands it to me. At first, I don't want to take it, but she insists and tells me there is reason.. so I take it. She goes back and sits on the bed and says, "The garter is a powerful tool and has been used by women for thousands of years." Now, I am confused.. but she continues, "The circle is the most sacred symbol of all. It is the symbol of God, the Alpha and the Omega, the Mother and the Father. Look in your bible and read Matthew chapter 15 verse 4. You will understand." I asked her if it was so sacred, then why was a prostitutue using it. She smiled and said, "Many thousands of years ago, Prostitutes were considered holy. They gave children to those who could not bear them so that they could fulfill God's command to be fruitful and multiply. The garter or circlet, was originally worn about their neck to signify their holy status and to remind them of two things: Of the sacredness of their duty and sacrifice because often the women would die in childbirth, since they did not have access to medicine the way that we do today and also to remind them that as holy women, they are owned only by God and could not marry. It came about that as Priests coveted more power, they sought to control the monies made by the holy women and when the holy women fought against them, they were denigrated and murdered. To keep themselves hidden, the Holy women began wearing the circlet about their leg and in so doing, protected their symbol while still allowing it to be used. Eventually, laws were enacted to prevent women from bearing children for others, but they still enacted the sacred rite, keeping their promise to keep holy the Alhpa, the creative force of God. And it is why, Jesus forgave the whore. In doing so, he acknowledged their place before the priests". She got up then, and walked toward the door. I thanked her for her wisdom and she gave me a hug.
