I'm sitting in Tesha's living room on the floor. Em Smith is sitting beside me on her knees. There is a little ring of glass bottles that are all connected in between us on the floor. Each glass bottle has a little burnt tree stump in the middle of it. We both understand that this is her fiance's stuff.
"I sure hope Chris gets over his little tree burning phase before we get married."
There are a few other bigger glass bottles around us. Em picks one up and hands it to me to hold. She puts a lit match to the opening of it. About ten seconds later, a flame forms in the base of the bottle. I remember the glass growing warm very quickly.
"I decided that I'm going to take that forest preservation class next semester, too. We'll probably study tree burning in there. Though I need that class to graduate, I would never burn trees willingly."
Em leaves and I notice Chelsea Ing sleeping on the couch. She is all balled up in a huge cream-coloured comforter. Though I can't see her (she is all underneath the blankets), the sight of her brings me peace.
I walk out the front door and straight down to a dock that overlooks the sand and ocean.
The first thing I notice as I'm on the dock is that the moon is radiating this pink light into a certain part of the sky. I think it's the most beautiful thing ever, so I grab my cell phone to take a quick picture. As I'm pressing the button, this huge splash comes up out of the ocean. The splash is so close that a few drops of water even hit me in the face. I caught it on camera and didn't even mean to, so I squeal out in excitement but also a little in fear.
A young boy who's standing next to me tells me not to worry. "It's okay! It was just a dolphin jumping! He does it very often and means no harm."
His words calm me, and we stand together watching a little family play in the ocean below us. There is a mother holding what seems to be a newborn baby. She is further in than her other two boys, who are just where the surface of the water meets the sand.
The boy I am with decides he wants to go stand in the water, too. I walk down the stairs with him because I want to make sure he's safe.
We walk down the wooden stairs to the left of us and are immediately in the sand. We hang back and watch the family at play for a few more minutes. One of the boys ends up falling as a bigger wave comes rolling in, but somehow, the younger brother helps him up before he can get caught underneath it. The mother finally realizes she should keep an eye on her children and they wander off together.
The little boy walks to where the two other boys were standing. I follow behind him. Suddenly the water starts rising very quickly. We hesitate for a bit and start walking back to the stairs, but the water is still rising. A bigger wave is coming, and the boy reaches up for my hand. I take his hand and lift him up. We safely start back up the stairs.
