The Last of Barrett's Privateers

(Get it, because it's about pirates and Halifax, huh, huh?)

I am asleep in my room but I am Albus Dumbledore. I get the feeling that I'm currently embroiled in a war and am just trying to get enough sleep to function. A canonball suddenly crashes through the window opposite me but it doesn't reach me. I wake up and realize that it was only a warning - it is too early for fresh aggressions to start, I think.

I get up and am no longer Dumbledore. My roommates are awake as well and we're all quickly getting dressed and prepared for the war. I wonder if I should wear my Slytherin robes or if I should wear something to blend in better downtown. I am standing in the bathroom when I notice that the canonball in my room is flashing red. I realize right away that it is going to explode and I throw it out the door and down our stairs. It explodes on the lawn and surpirses (but doesn't injure) a young boy who is standing out there.

It suddenly occurs to me that this isn't war, but a pirate game that all of Halifax is playing. The game is kind of like the game Assassins that is played in residence halls everywhere: every household in the city has an object that they must plunder from another household before they can move on to their next treasure. At the end of the day, the household with the most treasure wins. I don't know how anyone knows what item from whom they must steal and in which order, but it all makes sense in the dream.

At this point, I realize that it was the people across the street who shot the canonball into my room and I go to look. There's a hole in my window and I can see about five people and a canon on a balcony across the street cheering and generally being loud. It's very cold in my room depsite the fact that it seems to be summer outside, so I creep over to the window to close the blinds (IRL, my room is always colder if the blinds are open) to warm the room as well as to keep the enemy from spying on us.

My roommate Lyndsay is impatient to get going and start the game, but she wanders into the bathroom to brush her teeth anyway. She calls to me that all of our toothpaste is gone and that seems important somehow. We start looking for a telescope, or binoculars, or something to take with us and I find a little gold telescope that apparently belongs to my brother. It looks like plastic despite being gold and it says "Fisher Price" on it, but I know that it actually cost $1000, so we decide not to take it.

I go to look in my room (which is now the room that my sister and I shared at my parents'). I am looking for this Inspector Gadget toy I had as a kid that was a blue globe that turned into binoculars, but instead of finding it, I find a bunch of old My Little Ponies. I bring the ponies out to the kitchen (which is also my parent's, now) and my roommates and I reminisce about how cool they were.

There's a knock at the door and a woman and an older man come in trying to deliver coffee. They said that they're from Second Cup and that someone here ordered coffee. I think that is it great that they deliver, but say that they must be wrong because no one here had called them. Outside, the street is chaotic.

I go back to my old bedroom (being careful to avoid the window) and find a black box inside an old toy chest that contains a bunch of toothpaste from the people across the street. I realize that this is what they are looking for, and that I had better hide it again, and in a better place. I know that someone else must have plundered it from them, and hid it in my house. I don't want them to have the slightest chance of seeing it, so I sneak it into a black bookbag and try to casually walk out of the room and back to the kitchen.

My roommates and I decide that we can't risk taking it outside, so we go downstairs - by this point, I am no longer in Halifax, but back at my parent's house. We pass the family room door and I see that my cats are locked inside, presumably, to keep them out of the way of the "pirates" who can enter the house during the game. We go into the downstairs bathroom which is now huge but unfinished. I have some idea to hide the box inside the unfinished wall, but I wake up before I get the chance.

    Follow the Map

The beginning of this dream is very much like a video game.

I'm in a little pyramid in a lowered, stone courtyard. There are two entrances to the pyramid, both blocked by fire. Inside, there are two treasure chests. I open one and take out five pieces of map, then jump through the fire (which lowers as I do so) and start to run back to my friends outside the courtyard. In my rush, I drop pieces of the map, but I can't go back for them because we start to hear my rivals jump into the yard. They, too, are looking for the map, but don't seem to notice the pieces I've dropped on the stone floor. They walk up to one of the entrances to the pyramid and a chain shoots out from the other treasure chest inside and attaches itself around the ankle of one of them (there are three). As soon as the chain is fastened, the fire dies and they enter the pyramid. I jump back down, grab the pieces I dropped, and give one to each member of our party.

Following the first piece of map, we leave the courtyard area and enter a very pastoral area with a red bridge over a brook. We have to get across the bridge to get where we're going, but I have bad feeling about it. Another member of the group starts to get nervous the closer we get to it. Finally, I look at her and ask if it's her bridge - which means, I guess, that she has to be the one to cross first. Apparently, some people live under these kinds of bridges and kill anyone who tries to cross. The girl admits that it's hers and runs underneath it. The others lay a log across the strangely wide brook and start crossing. I stay near the bridge and start almost crawling over it.

When I get to the other side, it's suddenly the library in my school and I'm sitting at a table with my family and my aunt, uncle, and cousin. My cousin had been with me in the video game adventure and had a red box of luck trinkets from the journey. The only thing I remember being in the box was a blonde lock of hair from the girl under the bridge.

    Quasi-Vanilla Cookies

Date of dream: Wednesday, March 31, 2004

It's a normal, random morning before school except that my sister and I are horribly late. Everyone (she, my mother and I) is running around trying to get ready. So, in all the confusion, I decide to make a lunch. I put an insane amount of things in my paper bag and then I decide that I want a tea too, only there's not enough time to make it. Instead, I bring a full water bottle (thinking I'll boil it later), a tea bag, and a bag of sugar. Now, I take more sugar in my tea than is probably normal, but in this dream I had an entire bread bag full of it.

Anyway, when we finally get out the door (my mother was dropping us off on her way to work), I ask my mother if she can stop at the front door rather than the back like always. The front is closer to my locker and homeroom, but my sister complains so loudly that we have to take the long way.

When we arrive at the school, I run into the building only to find that it's not my school, it's the grocery store where I work. In the dream, I wasn't perplexed in the least by this and proceeded to run to the photolab where I work. I get there and the other girl who works there tells me that now we're making quasi-vanilla cookies as well and that it's not very hard to do. Apparently, the photolab makes cookies instead of photos. She leaves, and suddenly my friend shows up and we try a new quasi-vanilla cookie - they taste like cardboard.
