This dream is hazy but feels important so writing it up.

I was meeting a friend for the first time - mermaiden/sarah. Nick was there and possibly another friend but I'm not sure who. On the first night we all had a meal - My family were a large group of street performers/petty thieves/'rogues'. Some were biologically related to me and some were friends I considered part of my family,  I felt a lot of connection to these people, and we lived in a converted church, the living room was full of stained glass and had a huge cross in it. On the last day, we went walking up in some hills and mermaiden was talking about doing some sort of strengthening ritual and I was suddenly concerned and I asked if I would be able to participate in that since a certain spirit part that might be needed was inaccessible for me. Mermaiden asked me questions about that and as I started explaining I fell to the ground paralysed and exhausted ('shut down')

I'm not sure what happened next. I felt myself being carried up the hill. Talking about the part seemed to awaken/make accessible the part. I became aware of my childhood friend Geraldine (who was a child in the dream). She seemed to understand my confusion about the part and told me, seeming surprised I didn't remember, that the part's name was 'Melusine' ('it's melusine', don't you remember?!) Suddenly, a wave of understanding and recognition came over me. I recognized Melusine emotionally. I kept repeating the name over and over to remember it.

Additional Comments:

Melusine (or Melusina) is a figure of European legends and folklore, a feminine spirit of fresh waters in sacred springs and rivers.

She is usually depicted as a woman who is a serpent or fish from the waist down (much like a mermaid). She is also sometimes illustrated with wings, two tails or both, and sometimes referred to as a nixie.

I didn't know anything about the name Melusine before having this dream other than hearing the name at primary school in belgium. After reading the wikipedia article, I find it really interesting that mermaiden was in my dream and that melusine is sometimes seen as a mermaid with two tails!

Also:

Melusine is one of the pre-Christian water-faeries who were sometimes responsible for changelings. The "Lady of the Lake", who spirited away the infant Lancelot and raised the child, was such a water nymph.

and:

The Lady of the Lake is the name of several related characters who play parts in the Arthurian legend. These characters' roles include giving King Arthur his sword Excalibur, enchanting Merlin, and raising Lancelot after the death of his father. Different writers and copyists give her name variously as Nimue, Viviane, Elaine, Niniane, Nivian, Nyneve, Nimueh and other variations. [1] The Lady of the Lake's guise as a water fay also makes her somewhat similar to Melusine.

I'm interested in the fact Melusine is linked with Nimueh of the lake, because when I was twelve, for some reason that's a name I picked for on forums online - so there seems to be another link to me in that.

edited to add: A week or so after this my mum painted a picture for me as a gift based on one of the women in Klimt's watersnakes which I used to illustrate this dream!
