This dream was long and in-depth. The premise was strange; I was studying under a criminal or at least con artist of some sort, being a flunky but learning the tricks of the trade myself. Like an apprentice. He was sleazy and malevolent.
One of the things we did was pretend to help a certain homeless shelter whose residents were mostly insane. We didn't have the approval of the shelter. He knew a man who owned a black tow truck we would pay, and together we'd pull it up to the shelter at night and do business from it. I remember watching my mentor collect a lot of small change from these crazy people in the dark, but I didn't see for what.
One day the master got arrested. I felt by then I knew more or less what I had to do to keep his operations running for my own profit, and things worked out until it was our scheduled night to go to the homeless shelter. The man in the black tow truck stopped at his usual place, and I made to get into the cabin with him. He said, "Get in the back."
I was taken aback by this and angered, so I said, "Quit fucking around, let me in," and tried the passenger's door. It was locked.
"After all this time telling me you were helping these people? No. Get in the back."
"Fine, whatever. I don't want to listen to your stupid bullshit anyway," I told him, going around to the back of the tow truck. I liked riding outside; I've always been the sort of person who rolls his window down and I love the air. So I didn't really mind riding in the truck's bed.
It started coming together the moment I climbed up. I had only just gotten on when he started driving, but before I could close the tailgate I saw something that made me stop.
The truck bed was covered in bugs. The black truck had a brown layer over it consisting of cockroaches, slugs, snails, beetles, mantis-like insects, and a variety of others. Slugs made their way slowly across the truck bed's floor. Where the tailgate should close was a hollow section of the truck's siding, and inside this tunnel were roaches huddled up against one another in a long line. On the right wheel's raised section (the one closer to me) was an enormous slug, feelers waving, the length of my forearm and very fat. On the right wheel's was an equally large brown mantis, who watched me with bulbous, alien black eyes.
The bugs covered every surface, probably even the one I squatted on, but I didn't want to move because I would be forced to touch them with my hands. It was everything I could do at this point to grip the crane assembly above my head and keep from falling off the moving truck. Every time the truck bounced the mantis's eyes would follow me up and back down curiously.
The bugs had been cultivated in this truck bed by my mentor. He sold them to the disturbed homeless as food, and I was on my way to do it myself. I remember thinking, grotesquely, that this visit was for the Thanksgiving holiday, and as our turkey we were to cut apart the monstrous slug.
The dream ended.
Additional Comments:
At work we received a box of romaine lettuce crawling with slugs. I took great care to remove them and set them outside, safely.
In the dream I was more afraid of crushing and killing the bugs than for my cleanliness, in being reluctant to get a better hold or step on some surface they occupied.
I'm fascinated by bugs and insects, by the by.
