I walked into a small storefront that was in a mall. The shopkeeper was an older asian woman but I don't know what nationality (Japanese?). She was thin and had long grey hair tied up in a sparkly hairclip. She was wearing a red and black blouse and sweater with a flowered pattern, and a long black skirt. Her appearance was very elegant and I was drawn to her.
Some of the stuff she had for sale was jewelry with asian motifs, and those little bamboo spiral plants. She asked me if I was looking for anything in particular. I said "no just looking".
Usually I ignore shopkeepers, but I formed an immediate connection with her. She told me that she was a Christian. We began to speak about a certain type of "cabaret" singing that is popular in asia. There was a term we used but I can't recall it now. She could sing this style in Thai and Japanese. I told her, that if I were to sing like this I would be famous because I'm white. She looked at me and said "this is true, you should do that!" The idea that she could sing in two very separate asian languages, besides the fact that she used English as her primary language gave me encouragement that I would also be able to do it. It seemed that she might be able to give me lessons or some type of resource. I said goodbye to her and that we would meet again.
